Where Are You Now? - Ms. Gannon

Ms. Gannon is a Babylon alumni who taught elementary school at Babylon for 30 years and later retired. During her high school years, she was very involved in sports, theater, and chorus. She played field hockey, basketball, and softball during high school. Ms. Gannon also was an active part of the student council. She was so involved with school and her community that an active congressman from the time presented her with a special community service award!
A special memory that she shared was that she sang the star-spangled banner for her senior graduation! A second memory that Ms. Gannon had was that she remembered walking home for lunch when she was in elementary school, which really shows how much schooling has changed since then. A lesson that Ms. Gannon learned during her time at BHS is that it’s very important to try your best at everything that you do, even if you’re not the best at it. Ms. Gannon expressed that she had a very wonderful time at BHS. She said that she especially loved that the community is so small and that there were such amazing teachers.
Ms. Gannon graduated from Babylon High School and went to Oswego University in New York. She got a job at Babylon right away teaching 3rd grade for three years, then went on to teach 2nd and then 3rd grade again for twenty-seven years. Ms. Gannon told us that because she went to school in Babylon, teaching here was especially great because she had a lot of history and authority here so many of the other teachers looked up to her. During her time teaching at Babylon Ms. Gannon coached varsity field hockey for twenty-six years! She said that she was inspired to coach because she had played field hockey during high school, and she had loved it so much. Ms. Gannon shared with us that she hadn’t even wanted to play field hockey at first, but her teacher, Mr. Williams, suggested she should sign up for it and that teacher propelled her
field hockey and coaching career, as well as her daughter’s field hockey career because her daughter played during high school and also during college!
A fun fact about Ms. Gannon is that she taught Rick Klien in first grade, who later graduated from Babylon High School and is now the Chief Political Correspondent for ABC news! A message that Ms. Gannon would like to give is to cherish your years at Babylon because they are really special.
